Ego A Go Go

So you have mustered up the courage to get down to the gym. What do you take with you? Towel – check, headphones-check, water bottle-check, ego – leave that at home please.

This one is a tricky one. On the one hand there are the super confident and on the other hand you have the ego infused individual who knows it all without knowing anything.

If you are new to the gym environment, say just joined in the last 6-12 months, you are in a position to choose your path.

Everyone you see in the gym, the big hulking gym Dude, or the hot chick who has it all going on. Well I can assure you that they all started out fresh faced and enthusiastic once upon a time. Now this is where the ego part comes in. and it’s pretty vital. You see others hoicking large figure weights or squatting the same, then you look at the relatively small amount you are throwing about, and you may get the urge to, monkey see monkey do.  Well don’t, please don’t.

That is where the danger is, you don’t know how long big fella or hot girl have been doing their thing. If you go blindly in thinking that can’t be too hard, that’s where you will end up picking up an injury, which at best will set you back a few weeks or at worst, put you off from training altogether. And that will be a tragedy.

If you feel that you are not making any progress, you are best off asking, approach the big dude or the hot girl, ask questions. But don’t be creepy with the hot girl.. chances are they will be all too happy to impart their knowledge with you. If that’s not an option, then seek the advice of a PT.

They can assess you and work out a good gradual programme to follow. From which you will see solid results, that will remain, as long as you keep training of course.

There are no quick fixes in the body changing game, no matter what pills or potions you have seen. Train hard and consistently , eat well for the most part, follow the advice of your PT, they know their stuff. And check your ego at the door. When you enter the gym, you are coming into your temple, your place to discover who you are and what you can do, the ego has no place here.

Above all be happy and play nice, life is way too short.

Until next time, take care and love lifting.
